At the beginning of 2022, COVID-19 is still making the news. It is still the case currently, at the time of writing this. Indeed, the number of cases is increasing everywhere in the world.
We selected three stories about COVID-19 that we published in 2022. Two stories highlight anti-COVID products. The third one analyzes the industrial consequences of China’s zero-covid policy.
01/ New Product: We Tested an Air Purifier

With the COVID-19 pandemic, new products have appeared in our daily lives including air purifiers. These devices are intended to decontaminate closed spaces and, according to their manufacturers, provide a filtration efficiency of over 99% against viruses including SARS-CoV-2. How is this level of efficiency determined? Who carries out the tests? Is there an international standard? In January 2022, we went to the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) in Saint-Etienne where a new prototype of an air purifier was being tested.

02/ New Product: We Tested an Anti-COVID Mask

Proneem is a Marseille-based company that promotes sustainable chemistry. They have developed multiple treatments for textiles using natural, sustainable and non-toxic substances through microencapsulation technology. In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, the company developed a protective mask coated with silver chloride microcapsules that they claim is capable of filtering 100% of SARS-CoV-2. We visited the production site in Marseille to learn more about microencapsulation and discover how this technology can make textiles more intelligent.

03/ In the World: China’s Zero-Covid Policy

In April 2022, the city of Shanghai was placed under indefinite lockdown following the resurgence of the Covid-19 epidemic, particularly the omicron variant. The 25 million inhabitants were either locked at home or under surveillance in quarantine centers. The policy was soon extended to the rest of the country. The economic consequences, especially in the automotive industry, were very strong in the whole country of China.
