OMRON Electronic Components Europe has introduced an advanced safety-camera module, pre-trained to detect factory operators wearing cleanroom protective clothing. It can deliver a convenient, pluggable solution for machine builders and system integrators.

The new HVC-P2* module, B5T-007003, enhances the safety interlocks of semiconductor-, pharmaceutical-, and food-processing automation, or other equipment tended by operators wearing cleanroom suits that distort body geometry. Designers using this module can overcome the limitations of conventional pose-estimation models and other sensing modalities, such as thermal or ultrasonic sensing, and thus ensure reliable detection.

In a press release, Gabriele Fulco, Product Marketing Manager at OMRON Electronic Components Europe B.V. stated:

“The advanced detection technology embedded in our new camera modules delivers an ideal solution for the next generation of intelligent factories, concentrating safety at the edge for consistent real-time responsiveness and inherent data privacy.”

Detecting Human Body Characteristics

The B5T-007003 combines OMRON’s compact, rugged camera and processing hardware with new firmware containing the innovative algorithms developed specifically to recognize human body characteristics when clothed in the specialized PPE.

Trained with various postures including standing, sitting, crouching, and crawling, these algorithms can detect workers performing activities such as setup, reloading, servicing, and repairing equipment. The module generates a detection signal that lets the central machine controller automatically prioritise safe operating modes to protect workers in close proximity. The raw camera image, also optionally available, allows human supervision and checking.

Technical Specs

Two lens choices, including a long-distance type with 50° field of view and a wide-angle 90° lens, give flexibility to adjust the camera location and field of view depending on the application. Typical arrangements to maximise detection capability include looking vertically downwards, upwards, or using two or more cameras positioned at oblique angles.

The camera is connected to the board with a flexible printed circuit (FPC) that eases positioning, whether in a confined space inside existing equipment or in a custom housing. The board provides a USB connection that lets system builders set detection modes and trigger thresholds with a PC, using the dedicated GUI provided.

The kit also includes USB drivers and command specifications, as well as evaluation software and sample code to help users jump-start their projects.
