Painting a Cooler Future: Enercool’s Eggshell Innovation

Enercool, French leader in cool roofing solutions, has launched a new paint formulated from bio-sourced eggshells, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.

Enercool specializes in cool roof products, including reflective, heat-resistant paints, and waterproof membranes designed to protect buildings from extreme summer temperatures, enhance indoor comfort, and reduce reliance on air conditioning.

Enercool’s products are used on rooftops across various sectors, including industrial, commercial, and residential buildings, as well as public facilities like schools and daycare centers.

Innovating with Eggshells

Enercool is now pioneering the use of eggshells in their paints, achieving a 25% share of recycled raw materials. This initiative aims to replace traditionally mined calcium carbonate, thereby reducing the environmental impact of paint production.

The company has partnered with Circul’Egg, a specialist in eggshell recycling. Circul’Egg repurposes eggshells from hatcheries for industrial applications like materials, pet food, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics.

The startup uses a patented process to separate the eggshell’s outer layer from the membrane, presenting sustainable alternatives to existing solutions and uplifting the poultry industry as a whole.

In a press release, Maxime Claval, President of Enercool, commented:

“This raw material provided by Circul’Egg is a natural fit for us. It’s a local, abundant, bio-sourced material that aligns with our environmental values.”

Enhancing Paints with Eggshells

Given that the building sector accounts for nearly 30% of CO2 emissions in France, adopting eco-friendly solutions is crucial. Since the RE2020 regulation, the carbon footprint of buildings has become a central criterion. The construction market has embraced Environmental and Health Declaration Sheets (FDES) as a standard to compare the carbon weight of solutions, considering the entire product lifecycle.

Enercool’s paints, now incorporating eggshells, boast the best FDES scores in the cool roofing market.
