AI is reshaping the B2B sales funnel: referral traffic is declining, while expectations for transparency and responsiveness are rising. At the same time, there are growing indications that the remaining traffic is more qualified and closer to purchasing. But can manufacturers adapt to capitalize on this shift? In this article, Dante Swift, Marketing Strategist at VirtualExpo (our publisher) explains how they integrated conversational AI into our sourcing platform DirectIndustry, bridging the gap between evolving buyer expectations and the traditionally slow, opaque B2B sales funnel. The results suggest that declining traffic may be less of a challenge than an opportunity to redefine B2B lead generation — and pave the way for the new generation of Intelligent Sourcing Platforms.

SPECIAL REPORT
Redefining the B2B Sales Funnel

This is the first in a series of special reports charting the integration of AI into VirtualExpo’s B2B lead-generation platforms, including DirectIndustry. Since AI entered the mainstream in 2023, web visibility has begun shifting from volume to quality. This shift could be particularly significant for B2B, where AI can synthesise complex technical information in seconds, enabling faster, more informed and better-qualified lead generation.

We believe that, despite the disruption, B2B could emerge as one of the major beneficiaries of the AI revolution. Which is why we’re inviting you to join us as we embark on this transformation.

Putting AI at the Heart of Lead Generation

You’ve probably heard it all by now: B2B referral traffic has fallen by up to 60% for PMEs, since the arrival of AI, via chatgpt, in late 2022.

But amid all the doom and gloom, one important development may have escaped your attention: while traffic is declining, conversion rates are rising significantly. It makes sense. AI isn’t reducing demand for technical products; it’s simply reducing the number of clicks needed to find them.

That’s exactly what we’ve seen since integrating AI into our sourcing platform, DirectIndustry, www.directindustry.fr. Rather than declining, lead generation has increased dramatically. And lead quality hasn’t suffered either: it’s improved by 30%.

1. Conversational AI Requests

One of the biggest pain points for manufacturers is that the sales leads they receive often lack sufficient detail about the prospect’s project and technical requirements.

At the same time, UX testing shows that today’s visitors, raised in the age of TikTok and ChatGPT, are increasingly reluctant to fill out lengthy forms packed with mandatory fields just to get basic information. They want help defining their needs in a way that feels natural, intuitive and effortless. Conversational AI bridges that gap.

That’s why, on July 15 of this year, we began beta testing conversational AI on the French version of DirectIndustry, www.directindustry.fr .

Visitors could discuss and refine their requirements with an Intelligent Assistant.

The Intelligent Assistant would provide guidance on costs and applications and recommended relevant products as the visitors needs became clearer.

They could then select products and send quotation requests directly to manufacturers, all without ever leaving the conversation.

The Result: 30% Higher Lead Quality

Requests generated through conversational AI outperformed non-AI-assisted requests across all statistically significant lead-quality criteria.

2. AI-assisted Instant-reply Requests

We’ve discussed manufacturers’ biggest challenge when it comes to handling leads. But what about buyers?

Their main frustration is a lack of responsiveness: having to wait for an email reply — which may never arrive — just to obtain basic information about pricing or reseller availability.

That’s why, in August, we began rolling out our new instant-reply buttons. These allow visitors to receive immediate AI-generated information about pricing and reseller availability. These straightforward, but perfectly legitimate, enquiries account for 60–70% of traditional email requests.

By introducing instant-reply buttons, we more than doubled the overall number of requests and prospects acquired, without reducing the number of conventional quotation requests requiring a personalized response from the manufacturer. In other words, we captured additional demand without cannibalising traditional sales enquiries.

A note on lead quality: Instant-reply requests are distinct from conversational AI requests. They don’t contain the same level of detail or qualification — nor were they designed to.

Their purpose is different: to provide quick, indicative answers to frequently asked questions about pricing and availability, while capturing the prospect’s contact details. The result is a new source of prospect acquisition, addressing buyers’ immediate needs while giving manufacturers access to additional potential customers.

Next step: Combine the Two!

So far, conversational AI has increased lead quality, while instant-reply requests have significantly increased the volume of contacts captured. The next logical step is to combine the two: a sourcing experience where buyers get instant answers to basic questions, then seamlessly transition into a deeper AI-powered conversation to refine their requirements and submit fully qualified quotation requests.

This is our vision for the Intelligent Sourcing Platform: where sellers spend more time closing deals and less time chasing leads, while leveraging prospect scoring data and to prioritize their efforts where they matter most. There no reason you should pay an arm and leg for a just a handful of good leads. We aim to put an end to that equation : more and better requests – intelligent sourcing.

There is a lot to be done but that’s precisely what we’re working towards – and we will keep you updated step by step as we collect new performance data.

Stay tuned!
