In industrial facilities, air quality and cleanliness are paramount. Innovative technologies are emerging to tackle the challenges of contamination across diverse environments. One such breakthrough is the hydroxyl-generating device developed by Pyure, a manufacturer specializing in air purification solutions. During Automation Fair in Anaheim last month, we met with Steve McAfee, VP of Sales, to know more about their technology and its benefits.

What Is Pyure’s Hydroxyl Generating Device?

Pyure’s hydroxyl-generating technology utilizes multi-spectrum UVC wavelengths to create hydroxyl radicals (OH) from water vapor in the air. This process takes place in a reaction chamber within the device, which is a small cabinet, where water (H₂O) molecules are split to release hydrogen, leaving behind hydroxyl radicals.

How Does It Work?

Steve McAfee explains:

“As air moves through this device, the water vapor in that airstream hits our reaction chamber. Water is H2O. So we remove  hydrogen from that and you’re left with OH, that’s the hydroxyl. So as those hydroxyls enter now into the space that you’re treating, they scavenge hydrogen off of whatever the contaminants may be.”

The contaminants can be hydrocarbons, VOCs, bacteria, viruses and even mold.

Who Benefits from This Technology?

This technology is versatile and capable of addressing air quality challenges in large-scale industrial environments as well as smaller, localized spaces.

Pyure’s hydroxyl-generating devices currently serve a diverse clientele across various industries:

  • Industrial Plants: Neutralizing harmful gases, airborne VOCs and other contaminants and ensuring cleaner air for workers.
  • Healthcare Facilities: Preventing infections by purifying air in high-risk environments such as operating rooms.
  • Food Processing Plants: Ensuring hygiene by eliminating airborne bacteria that could contaminate products.
  • Data Centers: Maintaining a contaminant-free environment for sensitive equipment and personnel.
