Lhyfe, a French pioneer in green and renewable hydrogen production, has started construction on a hydrogen production plant in Germany. The facility will be located in the port area of Brake (Unterweser), on land owned by Niedersachsen Ports (NPorts). This is Germany’s largest public port operator. The future plant will serve as the first hydrogen facility in the northern region of Germany. It will make green hydrogen available to a wide range of regional stakeholders through container distribution (“bulk”). The ceremony for the first groundbreaking of the production facility took place yesterday.

Lhyfe is a French company that produces green and renewable hydrogen through water electrolysis. The company’s first site became operational in 2021. Two additional sites in France were inaugurated in December 2023.

The company is currently building several other sites across Europe, particularly in Germany.

Several Sites Under Construction

Lhyfe recently announced the start of construction of the largest hydrogen production plant in Baden-Württemberg, in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The groundbreaking ceremony for this 10 MW production facility took place in October.

Yesterday, the commencement of the construction of a second hydrogen plant in Germany was celebrated in the port area of Brake (Unterweser).

According to Lhyfe, this future plant will have the capacity to produce 4 tons of renewable hydrogen per day.

In a press release, Luc Graré, Head of Central and Eastern Europe at Lhyfe stated:

“We are delighted to build this new 10 MW unit in Brake. It demonstrates the economic viability of hydrogen solutions in the transport and industrial sectors, supporting the ambitious goals of the Lower Saxony region in building hydrogen infrastructure. The port of Brake offers ideal conditions for operating such a green hydrogen facility.”

The Lower Saxony Minister of Economic Affairs, Olaf Lies, also commented,

“The port location of Brake offers ideal conditions for renewable hydrogen production. With this project, we are not only strengthening regional development but also the synergy between industry and local stakeholders working together on innovative and sustainable solutions.”

The plant in Lower Saxony is expected to play a major role in the decarbonization of the port complex.

For Holger Banik, CEO of Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG and JadeWeserPort Realisierungs GmbH & Co. KG,

“By providing green hydrogen, our maritime port of Brake has even more to offer. This will allow the port industry to increasingly move away from fossil fuels through a broad network served over short distances. We see this as a significant contribution to the energy transition and circular economy in the region. The port of Brake offers a complete package, including available space and trimodal connections with rail, road, and waterways.”
