Sunnen specializes in honing parts. They also manufacture machines and tools for various industries. At IMTS 2022, they showcased their new vertical honing machine, the SV 3010.

According to Tom Dustman, International Sales Manager at Sunnen,

“This new machine has a completely new footprint with greater access to the tool spindle full set up. We therefore have greater visibility. We also have side panels and rear panels for access when this is a multiple spindle machine, 2 or 3 spindles machine.”

In addition, their honing machine comes equipped with a new Beckhoff control system that allows for easy repair if necessary.

The market segments they target are the hydraulic market, the automobile components manufacturing, the medical sector as well as the defense industry. Since COVID-19, they encounter many request from their customers for more automation.

“We have seen an increase in the requests from our customers asking for automation on our machinery, which we can do. We provide all the necessary input and output capabilities. So if a customer chooses to automate on his own we have that capability for the connection.

Many companies are indeed asking them how to switch from manual honing machines to automated machines.

“Many customers have manual honing machines with slower cycle times. But now they want faster cycle times. They also want a machine control to have more input into the process than with a manual operator. This can be explained by the fact that skilled technicians are no longer in huge supply.”

Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important for Sunnen. They are therefore integrating this into the design of their new equipment.

“In our machine design efforts, we never try to over-design with huge safety factors that would require more electrical energy. In addition, we are very careful, not only from the energy standpoint but also with recycling of the swarf coming out of the process.”

Sunnen’s machines for example integrate filtration units to capture the swarf and return clean cooling here.
