Greenly Launches a Free Carbon Calculator for SMEs

As COP 26 opened on Sunday, October 31 in Glasgow, Scotland, the French mobile application Greenly launched this week a carbon impact calculator for SMEs to help them easily engage in the energy transition. This free tool is aimed at making organizations aware of carbon footprinting.

Greenly, the mobile application that is well known for calculating the carbon footprint of our purchases, has launched a new free calculator that allows companies to estimate in a few minutes their annual CO2 consumption. The idea is to offer them in a few minutes keys to understanding their main emission items: offices, heating, electricity, transportation, etc. The results are calculated in tons of CO2 per year.

But rather than adopting a moralizing tone, Greenly proposes to switch to a more complete approach of emissions analysis according to its scope of emissions, using the regulatory method. This method allows for more complete measurement of emissions.

Scope 1: direct emissions

This scope covers GHG emissions from sources controlled by the organization, particularly those related to the manufacture of a product.

Scope 2: indirect emissions linked to energy consumption

This includes emissions associated with the production of electricity, heat, or steam imported for the organization’s activities. This first step helps to raise awareness before launching a real carbon assessment deployed according to the regulatory method.

Scope 3: other indirect emissions

Scope 3 includes all other emissions not accounted for in scope 1 and 2, but linked to the entire value chain, for example, the purchase of raw materials, services, employee travel, transport, waste, product use and end of life, capital assets, etc.
