Rockwell Automation has introduced its highly anticipated ControlLogix® 5590 controller, the latest engine powering the company’s Logix platform. Designed to address the evolving demands of modern manufacturing, the all-in-one controller delivers seamless software integration and multidisciplinary control across the enterprise—streamlining operations in unprecedented ways.

Facing intensifying global competition, labor shortages, and growing safety and cybersecurity risks, manufacturers must now manage increasingly complex production environments. Rockwell Automation highlights how fragmented, proprietary control and data systems hinder flexibility and drive up costs. The new ControlLogix 5590 aims to reverse this trend by offering a unified platform that combines advanced control capabilities, integrated software tools, and built-in protections.

A Platform for Smarter, More Secure Systems

According to Dan DeYoung, vice president and general manager of Production Control and Design at Rockwell Automation,

“The ControlLogix 5590 controller is not just an upgrade—it’s an engine built for the future of industrial automation.”

The company’s intent is to give manufacturers the ability to build smarter and more secure systems, ready to evolve with tomorrow’s requirements.

Key Features

Integrated functional safety

Every ControlLogix 5590 controller includes advanced functional safety capabilities without relying on separate safety models. Certified to stringent international standards, it helps companies build safer systems with less complexity.

High-performance processing for demanding applications

With high-speed processing and expanded memory capacity, the controller supports complex operations—from process and batch applications to discrete automation, motion control, and robotics. It targets manufacturers seeking a scalable, interoperable, high-performance platform that enhances productivity and efficiency on a single architecture.

Built-in cybersecurity, aligned with IEC 62443

Developed to protect systems from both current and emerging cyber threats, the controller’s embedded security features help maintain connected, compliant operations.

Streamlined engineering environment

The unified software suite—combining Studio 5000 Logix Designer and FactoryTalk Design Studio—simplifies development, accelerates deployment, and reduces engineering workload across the enterprise.

Such platforms that merge high-speed processing, integrated safety, and robust cybersecurity into a single architecture could be essential for manufacturers seeking to modernize efficiently while preserving operational continuity and resilience.

Availability

Rockwell Automation showcased the ControlLogix 5590 at Automation Fair, held November 17–20 in Chicago. FactoryTalk Design Studio will support the Standard and XT (corrosion-resistant) versions upon the release of version 2.03 in November 2025, with Process variants to be supported in a future update.
