SCHUNK Gripper Grabs Award

Hannover Messe saw SCHUNK win this year’s Hermes Creative Award for its Co-act Gripper JL1. One of a series of grippers designed for human-robot collaboration, the Co-act was conceived for smart production applications in the context of Industry 4.0, with software providing artificial intelligence. Co-act features decentralized control architecture and a complex sensor system to adjust to changing circumstances in real time. This is the first gripper capable of close cooperation with humans in the workplace. Capacitive sensors prevent collisions and tactile sensors differentiate workpieces from human hands. The device offers the operator optical feedback and touchscreen control. A camera mounted between the gripping fingers examines the surroundings and helps the Co-act find objects. A leading producer of gripping and clamping devices, SCHUNK claims its grippers never cause injuries, always detect human contact and never drop a workpiece.
