The Camera That Sees and Displays Colors in the Dark

/ / /

French company Photonis designed Kameleon, a low-light camera that can see in color, even at night. So far, night vision cameras only allowed monochrome and shadeless images, from black to green or red.

This technical prowess lies in a new ultra-sensitive CMOS sensor able to detect the smallest light particles even in the dark. For engineers, the challenge was to find the right algorithm that would enable the best color reconstruction. Photonis says on their website, “with total read-out noise below 4 e- without cooling, the Kameleon CMOS sensor outperforms all low light imaging sensors down to 4 mlx while supporting frame rates up to 100 fps at a full SXGA (1280 x 1024) resolution.”

This colorful night vision camera could find a place in many fields of application, from homeland security and surveillance to industrial vision and medical interventions.
