The Promise of a Wind Energy Island

/ /

TenneT, the European electricity transmission operator, has elaborated a plan for building large offshore wind farms interconnected through an island hub in the middle of the North Sea. In this hub-and-spoke structure, the spokes would constitute international electricity highways. Green electricity transmitted via direct current cables to nearby countries—including Belgium, Norway and Germany—would be traded via a single connection: the “Wind-connector.” According to TenneT’s plan, such modular islands will cover around 6 km² each, and enable the connection of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity. This plan could offer more affordable and cleaner electricity by 2025-2030.
