MATISS Emulates the Sense of Touch

A completely new method of exploiting haptics (or sense of touch) in the form of a human-machine interface has been revealed by French technology research organization CEA. MATISS – Magneto Textural Inertial Spinning System – is a simple-looking rotary button that exploits the ability of a magnetorheological fluid to change its viscosity in order to provide highly varied feedback for manual inputs. The device can achieve a ratio of minimum to maximum turning force of 1:1,000, which CEA describes as “unique”. Moreover, the technology is also completely reprogrammable so that it can be used in diverse applications such as surgical simulators or robot control.
