To Be Self-Powered or Not to Be

With this bendable and ultra-thin-film solar cell designed by South Korean scientists, it will soon be possible for any wearable electronics to be self-powered. Only 1 micrometer thick and super flexible, this solar cell can bend around a 1.4 millimeter radius—such as a pencil—without any damage. The cell is made from a gallium semiconductor that is stamped on a flexible metal surface. The bottom layer of the metal acts like a reflector, which enables the solar light to be directed back to the cell. Such technology could be implemented in devices where changing batteries is quite difficult, like sensors that monitor bridges or buildings.
