The World’s First Electric Highway is Swedish

Last month, Sweden inaugurated its first road designed for hybrid trucks. Equipped with both fuel and electric engines, the vehicles will be able to move along a 2-kilometer portion of a highway north of Stockholm without any emissions. A pantograph above the truck’s cabin will automatically raise and rub the catenaries to catch the current that will make it move. With this technology, no need to embed a heavy battery inside the vehicle. A small battery allows the trucks to drive 3 kilometers without the catenaries. Sweden is engaged in a zero-fossil-fuel transport ambition by 2030. The same kind of electric highway is slated to be deployed in California next year.
