FreeCon Contactless is Weidmüller’s new system for transferring electrical power from one element to another without physical contact. Entirely wear-free, it eliminates maintenance, downtime and production problems due to damaged or dirty contacts. These are especially prevalent in applications requiring frequent connection cycles. A prime example is industrial robots handling repetitive tool changes. Power is transmitted across an air gap via inductive resonance coupling, delivering up to 240 W with efficiency exceeding 90%. The compact units feature three mounting surfaces, facilitating adaptation to a variety of machines, and the primary module can approach the secondary from any direction. The system works even when rotational motion is required, offering the possibility of replacing high-maintenance slip ring transmitters. The system can be automated for use in tasks such as charging automatic guided vehicles. PLC control is also a possibility.
