Airbus A350: When Less is More

The wide-body Airbus A350-1000 is a bundle of innovation—wings that change shape in flight for better aerodynamics and controls designed to reduce pilot workload. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic construction and more efficient engines reduce fuel consumption by 25%, saving money and reducing environmental impact. At the same time, increased engine power boosts payload capacity and range, making possible Shanghai-Boston or Paris-Santiago flights. The company claims that quieter performance reduces cabin noise by 9% compared to the Boeing 777, and that passengers will enjoy wider seats and “elegant ambient lighting.” Scheduled to enter service this year, the new airliner can carry 366 passengers in a standard three-class configuration and a maximum of 440.
