Fewer and fewer sectors today are holding out when it comes to artificial intelligence. That latest convert: the car rental industry. AI offers undeniable advantages when it comes to assessing the state of a vehicle, which has not gone unnoticed by Olympic Location, a French rental company. They have just installed an artificial intelligence device capable of scanning the bodywork of their rental vehicles to detect any damage developed by French start-up Tchek.

The Tchek technology was developed in Marseille in 2016 with the ambition to automate the inspection of vehicles. The inspection terminals are equipped with high-resolution cameras capable of taking 1,000 photos in just a few seconds as the vehicle goes through. Artificial intelligence then analyzes the images and makes an assessment.

80% of the damage identified is scratches, cracks, and dents. But the machine is constantly learning to improve its knowledge of the damage and thus improve detection. 20,000 vehicles have already been inspected by Tchek machines in France.

For the moment Tchek is focusing on the car rental sector but its CEO isn’t ruling out other industrial applications such as metrology.
